Street Collections - Induction

AIMS, OBJECTIVES and LEARNING OUTCOMES

TARGET AUDIENCE

  • People who are about to start work within front line waste and recycling collection operations and need to understand today’s good practice guidance to keep themselves and others safe whilst completing their duties.
  • This training course would be suitable for casual / temporary / agency staff, providing pre-engagement awareness of the good practice measures required in street collection operations.

AIMS

  • To provide an understanding of today’s good practice guidance for waste and recycling collection operations
  • To provide knowledge of the actions required to keep themselves and others safe whilst completing “on street” waste and recycling collection operations
  • To provide knowledge of the accidents that can happen if good practice is not followed

OBJECTIVES

  1. To raise awareness of the legislation that governs the way waste is managed by local authorities
  2. To provide an understanding of the employers and employees responsibilities within the Health and Safety at Work Act
  3. To raise awareness of actions which may constitute a breach of the Health and Safety at Work Act
  4. To provide knowledge of the waste industry accident record
  5. To provide an understanding of risk evaluation
  6. To help candidates identify high risk activities within street collection operations
  7. To help candidates understand the safety requirements at a range of waste discharge sites
  8. To provide an opportunity for candidates to take part in a risk assessment exercise

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • On successful completion of the course, participants will be able to;
  • Understand the legislative rationale for segregated waste collection operations
  • Identify the component parts of the waste hierarchy
  • Describe the principles of risk evaluation
  • Complete a risk evaluation exercise
  • Recognise opportunities to reduce the risks and improve the safety of street collection operations
  • Understand the individual actions, of each collection team member, necessary to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act  Implement  good health and safety practice within waste collection operations
  • Explain how their individual actions contribute towards the safe operations of a waste collections team
  • Understand how their actions can help minimise the impact of street collection operations on members of the public and other road users
